Due to continued growth, our client is seeking an experienced and motivated Metal Machinist (First Class) to join their team in Port Hedland, Western Australia.
About the Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up and operating a range of metalworking and machining equipment to manufacture, repair and finish precision metal components for construction, maintenance and industrial projects across the Pilbara and regional Western Australia. The role requires a high level of accuracy, technical knowledge and attention to detail, together with a strong commitment to workplace safety.
Key Responsibilities
• Interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and job instructions to determine suitable materials, machining processes, tooling, operating sequences and machine settings.
• Select and prepare appropriate metal stock, components and materials for machining and fabrication.
• Set up and operate conventional and computer-controlled machining equipment to manufacture metal components to specified dimensions and tolerances.
• Set guides, stops, machine controls, cutting tools, dies and other equipment according to job requirements.
• Measure, mark and machine metal components using processes including cutting, turning, grinding, milling, drilling, boring, planing and pressing.
• Use precision measuring instruments to check dimensions, alignment, clearances, tolerances and finished components for accuracy.
• Fit and assemble machined metal components and sub-assemblies for machinery, equipment and other mechanical applications.
• Cut, thread, bend and install hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines where required.
• Diagnose faults in machinery and mechanical components and carry out repairs, adjustments and preventative maintenance.
• Dismantle, overhaul and repair mechanical parts, machinery components and fluid power equipment.
• Install, align and commission machinery and equipment at project sites where required.
• Clean, deburr, grind and finish machined components to achieve the required surface finish and specifications.
• Maintain machining equipment, tools and work areas in safe and serviceable condition.
• Work collaboratively with supervisors, tradespeople, clients and other project personnel.
• Complete required job documentation and maintain accurate work records.
• Ensure all work is undertaken safely, efficiently and in accordance with relevant standards, specifications and workplace procedures.
Essential Requirements
• Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (MEM31519) or equivalent relevant trade qualification.
• At least three years of relevant metal machining experience.
• Current Construction White Card.
• Current Australian Driver's Licence, with Manual preferred.
• Demonstrated experience operating and setting up metalworking and machining equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Experience using precision measuring instruments and working to close tolerances.
• Ability to safely operate workshop machinery, hand tools and power tools.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol screening.
• National Police Clearance or willingness to obtain one.
• Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
• Working at Heights certification.
• Confined Space certification.
• Elevated Work Platform (EWP) Licence.
• First Aid Certificate.
• HR Driver's Licence.
• Experience with CNC machining equipment.
• Previous experience working on mining, government, commercial or remote construction projects.
• Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, machinery maintenance or mechanical repairs.
This position is open to Australian citizens, permanent residents and candidates who are currently onshore in Australia with valid work rights.
