About the Role

Mercury Colleges Pty Ltd is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and experienced Accountant to join our professional team in Sydney CBD.

The successful candidate will prepare, analyse, and report on financial information; maintain and review accounting systems and internal financial controls; prepare financial statements, budgets, and financial forecasts; monitor financial performance; and assist the organisation in meeting its accounting, taxation, compliance, and statutory obligations.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and analyse monthly management accounts, financial statements, financial reports, budgets, and financial forecasts for management review and decision-making.

• Examine and analyse the College’s operating costs, income, revenue, expenditure, cash flow, and overall financial performance, including the financial performance of education and training operations.

• Prepare financial statements and supporting financial documentation for management, directors, shareholders, and relevant statutory and regulatory bodies, in accordance with applicable Australian accounting standards and statutory requirements.

• Assure the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of financial information contained in financial reports and ensure compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

• Maintain and review the general ledger and accounting records to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the RTO’s financial information.

• Prepare, review, and evaluate bank reconciliations and investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies, variances, and irregularities.

• Assist management in formulating and reviewing budgetary and accounting policies, financial procedures, and internal financial controls appropriate to the College’s operations.

• Assist management with financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, and assessment of financial risks associated with business and operational activities.

• Examine financial information and provide reports, analysis, and recommendations to management regarding the RTO’s financial position, performance, expenditure, revenue, and operational activities.

• Prepare and lodge tax returns and other taxation documentation, and provide financial and taxation information and advice to management regarding the College’s business structure, financial plans, and operations.

• Monitor compliance with relevant Australian accounting standards, taxation requirements, financial reporting obligations, statutory requirements, and applicable internal policies and procedures.

• Review, maintain, and improve accounting systems, procedures, and internal control systems to ensure appropriate financial governance and accurate financial reporting.

• Introduce, maintain, and review accounting systems and advise management on the selection and appropriate application of computer-based accounting systems and accounting software.

• Advise management on accounting systems, financial procedures, record-keeping requirements, accounting policies, and appropriate financial controls.

• Manage and monitor the College’s funds, cash flow, financial resources, and banking arrangements, and provide management with information regarding liquidity and financial requirements.

• Identify accounting, financial control, reporting, taxation, and compliance issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions and improvements to management.

• Conduct financial investigations and prepare financial reports and analyses where required, including investigating significant financial discrepancies, irregularities, or suspected financial mismanagement.

• Assist with internal and external audits by preparing financial statements, financial reports, accounting records, reconciliations, and supporting documentation, and respond to audit findings where required.

• Provide financial and taxation advice to management in relation to business planning, operational activities, financial arrangements, and the financial implications of proposed business decisions.

• Assess the financial implications and risks of significant operational or capital investment decisions undertaken by the College and provide financial analysis and recommendations to management.

Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role, you will possess:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting

• At least two years of professional accounting experience in a similar role within an RTO is essential.

• Demonstrated experience in financial accounting, financial reporting, management reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and account reconciliation

• Strong knowledge of Australian accounting standards, taxation requirements, financial reporting, and accounting compliance

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in maintaining accounting systems and internal financial controls

• Demonstrated ability to analyse financial information, identify discrepancies and variances, and provide appropriate recommendations to management

• Experience using accounting software including QuickBooks, Reckon, MYOB, and/or Xero.
