Welders / Metal Fabricators

Thornton Engineering Australia is a leading Australian steel fabrication company located in Corio, VIC delivering complex structural steel solutions for major infrastructure, construction, mining, energy and industrial projects across Australia. We are currently seeking an experienced Welder/ Metal Fabricator under a 6-months contract to support the critical early stages of the Victorian Eastern Freeway Project one of the largest structural steel projects undertaken by the company.

Key Responsibilities

- Perform structural steel welding on large and complex assemblies including gantries, beams, columns, trusses, portals, platforms and associated steelwork.

- Interpret fabrication drawings, welding procedures and project specifications.

- Conduct fit-ups, alignment and dimensional checks to ensure compliance with project requirements.

- Support quality assurance activities, inspections and weld traceability requirements.

- Safely operate welding, fabrication and associated workshop equipment.

- Maintain compliance with workplace health, safety, environmental and quality procedures.

- Share specialist welding knowledge and support continuous improvement of fabrication processes.

Skills & Experience

- Demonstrated experience in structural steel welding within heavy fabrication environments.

- Experience welding large, heavy or complex steel structures such as gantries, trusses, bridges, portals or similar infrastructure projects.

- Strong understanding of welding procedures, fit-up techniques, distortion control and dimensional accuracy.

- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols and technical specifications.

- Experience working within quality-controlled fabrication environments and inspection systems.

- Strong commitment to workplace safety, quality workmanship and teamwork.

- A recognized welding, engineering fabrication or related trade qualification; or

- Extensive equivalent industry experience in complex structural steel welding.

Desirable

- Current welding qualifications.

- Experience with major infrastructure or bridge projects.

- Overhead cranes, dogging, rigging, forklift or working at heights licences.

- Experience with trial assembly and large structural steel fabrication.

Salary range is $70,000-$80,000 dependent on qualifications and experience
