We are seeking highly experienced Wood Machinist to join our team of dedicated professionals.
Role Purpose
As a Wood Machinist you will set up and operate woodworking machines and wood turning lathes to shape wood stock, finish and polish furniture, and make picture frames and frame paintings, photographs and other artwork. You will also interpret technical drawings to manufacture custom wood products like furniture, cabinetry, and structural elements (window frames, doors, and floorboards) while maintaining strict quality and safety standards
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Study drawings, work orders and sample parts to determine specifications
Determine tooling and machine requirements and sequence of operations
Set up woodworking machines and wood stock for correct cutting, planning, turning, shaping and sanding
Operate machines to cut, plane, turn, shape and sand work pieces
Remove old finishes by stripping with steel wool and glasspaper, and by applying solvents and paint strippers, and removing softened finishes by scraping
Apply varnish, shellac, lacquer, stains and paint to surfaces and polishing and waxing finished surfaces
Fitting and fastening frame pieces
Mounting backing materials and subjects for framing
Inspect finished pieces to ensure accuracy, compliance with manufacturing instructions, and adherence to quality standards
Perform routine maintenance on machinery, such as changing knives, grinding heads, and sharpening blades
Essential Requirements
Proven experience reading shop drawings and working with solid timber, engineered wood, and other wood-based products
Strong understanding of wood grading, joinery techniques, and operating various cutting/shaping tools
Strict commitment to following workplace safety procedures and properly using machine guards and personal protective equipment (PPE)
