Heavy Vehicle Mechanical Technician/Heavy Truck Drivers
About this job
ATTS Business Group Pty Ltd
Heavy Vehicle Mechanical Technician (ANZSCO 312512 - Mechanical Engineering Technician)
Full-time/Permanent
$80,000 - $90,000 (salary will be considered commensurate to qualifications and experience)
Position Overview
This position is distinct from that of a Diesel Motor Mechanic or Motor Mechanic, as its primary function is not routine vehicle servicing, engine maintenance or general automotive repair. The role is specifically focused on the technical inspection, assessment, dismantling, refurbishment, precision reassembly and testing of mechanical assemblies and components used in heavy vehicles. Given the substantial operating loads and demanding conditions under which the clients' heavy vehicles operate, the position requires particular attention to mechanical integrity, component tolerances, accurate reassembly, reliability and the prevention of premature component failure and costly vehicle downtime. These technical responsibilities appropriately align the position with Mechanical Engineering Technician (ANZSCO 312512).
Key Duties and Responsibilities
*Inspect and technically assess heavy-vehicle mechanical assemblies and components, including driveline components, axles, hubs, bearings, suspension assemblies, shafts, joints, bushes, mounting systems and coupling mechanisms, to determine their condition, wear and continued serviceability.
*Systematically dismantle mechanical assemblies to enable detailed examination of individual components for abnormal wear, distortion, cracking, excessive movement, incorrect clearances, misalignment and other mechanical deficiencies.
*Measure and assess mechanical components using appropriate precision measuring and testing equipment, comparing dimensions, clearances, alignment and wear against manufacturer specifications, tolerances and operational requirements.
*Determine whether worn or damaged components can be adjusted, resurfaced, reshaped, refurbished or require replacement, taking into account their condition, operating loads, service history and required reliability.
*Undertake and coordinate the refurbishment, adjustment and preparation of mechanical components and assemblies, including bearings, bushes, shafts, joints, mounting arrangements, couplings and other load-bearing or wear-related components prior to reassembly.
*Apply the appropriate lubrication, greasing, sealing and mechanical protection requirements to bearings, joints, bushes and other moving or friction-bearing components to support correct operation and minimise premature wear.
*Precisely reassemble mechanical components and assemblies using the required alignment, clearances, torque settings, fastening sequences and fitting procedures, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the completed assembly.
*Verify the correct positioning, fitment and interaction of individual components during reassembly, recognising that incorrect tolerances, alignment or assembly can result in premature failure, consequential mechanical damage and significant operational downtime for the client.
*Conduct post-assembly inspections, mechanical checks and functional testing to verify correct movement, alignment, clearances, component interaction and overall serviceability before the vehicle is released back to the client.
*Investigate recurring component failures and abnormal wear patterns to identify underlying causes, including misalignment, excessive loading, inadequate lubrication, incorrect component interaction or deterioration of associated mechanical components.
*Assess replacement parts and components for technical compatibility, dimensions, load requirements and suitability before installation, ensuring they correspond with the specifications and operational requirements of the relevant mechanical assembly.
*Assist in establishing preventative inspection and maintenance requirements based on component condition, vehicle utilisation, operating environment, load demands, service history and identified patterns of mechanical wear.
*Maintain accurate technical records of inspections, measurements, identified defects, component condition, refurbishment or replacement undertaken, reassembly work and final testing for vehicles serviced on behalf of external clients.
*Liaise with client fleet and maintenance personnel regarding identified mechanical defects, component condition, required corrective work and preventative maintenance recommendations, with particular emphasis on maintaining vehicle reliability and minimising downtime.
*Take responsibility for ensuring that completed mechanical assemblies are accurately reassembled, inspected and technically verified before return to service, recognising the significant safety, operational and financial consequences that mechanical component or assembly
failure may have for clients operating heavy vehicles in demanding logistics environments.
