Fleet Manager
About this job
Jorawar and Nawab Group Pty Ltd at Bellbird Park, QLD, is looking for an experienced Fleet Manager to join the team. The business is a Queensland based transport and logistics operator that moves freight for manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers and other logistics providers, on local and regional work in Queensland and on long distance runs across Australia. Its services span sideloader lifts and container movements between wharf, depot and customer sites, heavy haulage of oversized loads, fumigation carried out to Queensland quarantine and safety standards, warehousing and distribution, container packing and unpacking, house and warehouse relocations, and same day courier and single item delivery. The Fleet Manager will take charge of the vehicles, the equipment and the daily movement of freight, and the role will suit someone who enjoys the pace of a transport operation and wants real responsibility for how it runs.
Position: Fleet Manager | Bellbird Park, QLD
Key Responsibilities
• Receive customer orders and freight bookings, establish exactly what each job requires, and convert them into daily and weekly run plans that keep every vehicle in the fleet productively loaded.
• Build and release the transport schedule across local, regional and interstate work, sequencing lifts, collections and deliveries so that container, palletised and oversized consignments move on the day promised and empty running is kept to a minimum.
• Arrange the collection and delivery of containers, machinery, equipment and general freight, including sideloader lifts at customer premises, wharf and depot transfers, on site container repositioning and the return of empty containers.
• Coordinate the movement of vehicles and plant on behalf of customers, taking care of the permit, route, escort and site access requirements that attach to oversized and heavy haulage loads.
• Work directly with customers to determine their transport requirements and advise them on the right equipment for the task, whether that is a sideloader, a flat top or drop deck combination, a dedicated vehicle for a removal, or a container packed and stored before onward transport.
• Quote cartage and hire rates, explain the obligations attaching to each engagement, including insurance cover, standing time, demurrage and access limitations, and confirm the commercial arrangement before work is released to the yard.
• Handle service complaints and freight claims personally: investigate what went wrong, keep the customer informed, settle the outcome and put corrective action in place so the same fault is not repeated.
• Organise the purchase, replacement and disposal of prime movers, trailers, sideloader units and ancillary equipment, weighing purchase, lease and hire options and putting a costed recommendation to management before anything is committed.
• Run the maintenance programme for the whole fleet, from scheduled servicing, tyres and inspections through to major repairs and upgrades, so that every vehicle continues to meet industry and customer expectations and downtime is planned rather than discovered.
• Manage fuel across the fleet, covering supply arrangements, fuel card administration, consumption monitoring by vehicle and by route, and the records supporting fuel tax credit claims.
• Keep registrations, insurances, inspections, permits and heavy vehicle accreditations current for every unit in the fleet, and maintain a compliance calendar so that nothing lapses unnoticed.
• Maintain the operational records of the business and prepare regular statements and reports for management covering fleet utilisation, on time performance, maintenance and fuel spend, cost per kilometre and the profitability of individual jobs and customers.
• Monitor telematics, vehicle tracking, work diaries and driver records, and act promptly on fatigue, speed, mass and load restraint exceptions.
• Roster, allocate and supervise drivers, subcontractors and owner drivers, verifying licences and accreditations, inducting new starters and managing day to day performance.
• Uphold chain of responsibility duties and Queensland heavy vehicle requirements across the operation, and ensure quarantine sensitive freight is fumigated, documented and released in line with the applicable biosecurity standards.
• Oversee warehousing and distribution activity, including receipt and storage, container packing and unpacking, stock movement and despatch to the final destination.
• Engage and manage subcontract carriers and interstate partners for lanes the fleet does not run directly, monitoring their rates, insurances and service performance.
• Control operating costs by reviewing supplier, repairer and tyre pricing, approving invoices against the jobs they relate to, and contributing to the annual fleet budget and vehicle replacement plan.
• Investigate breakdowns, damage and incidents, complete the reporting these require, and use what the reviews show to lift safety and reliability across the fleet.
• Look after established customer accounts and, as capacity allows, identify new freight opportunities that suit the equipment and lanes the business already runs.
Qualifications and Experience
• At least 3 years of relevant experience in fleet, transport or logistics operations.
• An AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma.
Hours and Salary
Hours: 38 hours per week - Full-time, permanent position
Salary: $75,000 to $85,000 plus superannuation per annum
Personal Attributes
• A clear and confident communicator with customers, drivers, subcontractors and suppliers alike.
• Practical mechanical understanding of heavy vehicles and equipment, with a real commitment to safety and compliance.
• Accurate and disciplined with records, costs and reporting.
• Reliable and hands on, and willing to take full ownership of the fleet and how it performs.
