About the Role The Welder (First Class) will be responsible for fabricating, assembling and repairing metal components used in signage structures and general fabrication projects. The successful applicant will be required to interpret technical drawings and specifications, prepare and shape metal components, perform welding using a range of processes, inspect completed welds and ensure all finished work meets required quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities Studying blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine job requirements. Selecting, cleaning and preparing metal stock for fabrication. Cutting marked-out metal sections and shapes using hand tools, flame cutting equipment and metal cutting machinery.
Shaping and bending metal sections and pipes using hand tools, machinery, heating and other fabrication techniques. Aligning components to be joined using measuring instruments, clamps and hand tools. Joining metal sections using appropriate welding techniques, bolting and riveting.
Performing MIG, TIG, MMAW and gas welding as required. Examining welds for bead width, penetration, alignment, strength and precision. Cleaning and smoothing welds using grinding, filing, chiselling and finishing equipment.
Cleaning, polishing and finishing fabricated products to the required standard. Fabricating and welding metal components for signage products, including frames, mounts, brackets, structural supports and architectural signage elements. Fabricating and assembling metal components in accordance with engineering drawings, project specifications and applicable Australian Standards.
Inspecting completed work to ensure accuracy, structural integrity and quality. Maintaining welding equipment, fabrication machinery, tools and workshop areas in a clean and safe operating condition. Following all workplace health and safety requirements and correctly using personal protective equipment.
Working collaboratively with fabricators, signage installers, supervisors and other tradespeople to ensure projects are completed efficiently and to the required standard. Essential Qualifications and Experience Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade or a relevant AQF qualification, or an equivalent overseas qualification. Minimum 1–3 years of relevant post-qualification experience as a Welder or Welder (First Class).
Demonstrated experience in MIG, TIG, MMAW and gas welding processes. Experience working with materials including mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, blueprints and welding symbols.
Good knowledge of welding equipment, fabrication machinery and workshop tools. Knowledge of relevant Australian welding and workplace safety standards. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality workmanship.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good time-management and organisational skills. Availability to commence employment as soon as reasonably possible.
Desirable Previous experience in signage manufacturing or architectural metalwork. Experience working in a commercial fabrication workshop. Experience fabricating signage frames, brackets, structural supports and custom metal components.
Forklift licence or previous experience operating fabrication and workshop machinery. Pre-employment Requirements Applicants must: Have the ability to work full-time in Australia. Be able to provide references from previous employers.
Demonstrate relevant qualifications and employment experience. Be willing to comply with all workplace health and safety requirements.
