Irrigation Designer

Full-time - 38 hours per week

SUMMARY

LT Fresh Produce Pty Ltd, trading as Midwest Vegetables, is a large-scale vegetable farming business in the Geraldton region of Western Australia. The business operates year-round greenhouse and farm production using modern agricultural machinery, automated irrigation and fertigation systems, and supporting farm infrastructure. It produces cucumbers, Shanghai cabbage, ginger and garlic for wholesale markets. The scale and intensity of production require well-designed and efficient irrigation infrastructure to support reliable water distribution, efficient crop production and the ongoing development of the farming operation.

Position Objective

The Irrigation Designer is responsible for planning and developing irrigation and water distribution systems to support efficient commercial vegetable production across the business's greenhouse and farm areas. The role assesses crop production requirements, site conditions, water availability and existing infrastructure to develop irrigation layouts, hydraulic specifications and system improvements. It provides technical design support for new irrigation infrastructure, system expansions and upgrades, helping ensure that irrigation and fertigation systems are appropriately designed for reliable water delivery, production efficiency and future operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct site assessments of greenhouse and farm production areas, considering water source availability, soil and site characteristics, crop requirements, existing infrastructure and environmental conditions to determine appropriate irrigation solutions.

• Design and plan efficient irrigation and fertigation systems for greenhouse and farm production areas, taking into account water availability, crop requirements, site conditions, operational needs and water-use efficiency.

• Prepare detailed irrigation layouts, technical drawings, plans and specifications, including system configuration, equipment, materials and water distribution requirements.

• Undertake hydraulic calculations and technical assessments relating to water flow, operating pressure, pressure loss, pipe sizing, system capacity and distribution requirements to support effective irrigation system design.

• Select and specify appropriate irrigation equipment and components, including pumps, pipelines, valves, filtration systems, emitters, controllers and associated infrastructure based on design and operational requirements.

• Calculate water requirements and develop irrigation parameters and schedules appropriate to crop types, production areas, water availability and system capacity.

• Assess existing irrigation infrastructure and develop designs for modifications, upgrades and extensions to improve water distribution, system efficiency, capacity and suitability for changing production requirements.

• Prepare technical specifications, equipment and material requirements and other design documentation to support procurement, installation planning and implementation of approved irrigation projects.

• Inspect and evaluate irrigation systems and completed installations against approved designs and technical specifications, identifying design-related issues, inefficiencies or areas requiring modification.

• Maintain accurate irrigation plans, design records and technical documentation and provide technical guidance to management and relevant personnel regarding system design, performance, improvements, future upgrades and expansion requirements.

Assessment Criteria

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate:

• A qualification in irrigation, agriculture, agricultural technology or a related technical field, or at least three years of relevant industry experience.

• Demonstrated experience in the design and planning of irrigation systems for commercial agricultural or horticultural production.

• Experience conducting site assessments, including consideration of water sources, soil conditions, terrain, crop requirements and existing infrastructure when developing irrigation solutions.

• Demonstrated ability to prepare irrigation system layouts, technical drawings and specifications using CAD or similar design software.

• Practical knowledge of hydraulic principles and calculations, including water flow, operating pressure, pressure loss, pipe sizing and system capacity requirements.

• Experience selecting and specifying irrigation equipment and components, including pipes, valves, sprinklers or emitters, controllers and other water distribution equipment.

• Experience supporting the implementation of irrigation designs, including coordinating with installation personnel, reviewing completed works and resolving design-related issues.

• Ability to assess irrigation system performance and develop practical design modifications, upgrades or improvements to support water efficiency, reliability and changing production requirements.

• Strong technical problem-solving, organisational and communication skills, with the ability to maintain accurate documentation and provide technical guidance to management and operational personnel.
