Engineering Manager
About this job
360 Automation Pty Ltd, trading as 360 Automation, at Cranbourne West, VIC, is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to join the team. The business is an Australian owned engineering and industrial automation specialist that supplies, installs, commissions and services advanced industrial machinery for manufacturers and fabrication businesses across the country, working across CNC and sheet metal machinery, laser systems, robotic automated production equipment and mechanically integrated plant. A good deal of what the team installs is specialised machinery sourced from overseas and integrated into production lines that are already running, so careful commissioning, planned maintenance and methodical fault diagnosis are what clients rely on. With project volume and the service footprint both growing, the company is appointing an Engineering Manager to take ownership of engineering delivery and hold the technical standard across every project and site. The position will suit a degree qualified engineer who is confident leading a technical team and happy to stay close to the machinery rather than run it from a distance.
Position: Engineering Manager
Location: Cranbourne West, VIC 3977
Key Responsibilities
• Interpret machine layouts, general arrangement drawings, mechanical and electrical schematics and manufacturer specifications for each project, and advise the technical team and the client on the engineering methods, sequencing and site preparation needed to bring the equipment into production.
• Set the schedule and the budget for every machinery supply, installation and commissioning project, allocating technicians, plant and lifting resources against each stage and reporting cost and progress at each milestone.
• Determine and monitor the engineering plans and procedures the business works to, covering installation methodology, commissioning and sign-off, fault escalation, service reporting and workshop practice.
• Confirm that every machine is installed, fitted and commissioned in conformity with the approved drawings and specifications, and that it satisfies Australian electrical safety, machine guarding and workplace health and safety obligations before it is signed over to the client.
• Hold the technical team to the standards the business is judged on: workmanship that passes first inspection, jobs delivered inside the quoted cost and on the agreed date, machine performance verified rather than assumed, and safe conduct on every site.
• Oversee the preventative maintenance side of the service business, setting inspection routines, service intervals and critical spares holdings so client CNC, laser and robotic equipment stays available and continues to run efficiently.
• Work with the sales team on the engineering content of quotations and equipment selection so every proposal is correctly specified and achievable, and liaise with client production and manufacturing managers on layout, material flow, cycle times and how new equipment will tie into an existing line.
• Lead development work on custom automation solutions, including robotic cell design, material handling, tooling, jigs and retrofit upgrades to older plant, and assess new machinery and control platforms offered by our overseas suppliers before they are taken into the range.
• Take charge of commissioning specialised imported machinery, from arrival inspection through to site acceptance testing, and manage the technical relationship with the overseas manufacturers and local component suppliers behind it, covering engineering clarifications, warranty claims and spare parts.
• Supervise, mentor and allocate the mechanical and electrical technicians across concurrent installations and service calls, setting the technical benchmark for the team.
• Manage the service response, triaging breakdown calls on the basis of production impact and keeping clients informed until the machine is running again, and investigate recurring faults through to root cause rather than repeating the repair.
• Tune installed equipment after handover and deliver operator and maintenance training, so clients reach the throughput and part quality the machine was bought to deliver and can look after it safely.
• Keep project documentation complete and current, from installation records and commissioning reports to as-built drawings and safe work method statements, and report to management on project status, engineering performance and technical risk.
Qualifications and Experience
• At least 1 year of relevant experience in an engineering role within industrial machinery, automation, manufacturing equipment or a closely related field.
• An AQF bachelor degree or higher qualification.
Hours: 38 hours per week - Full-time, permanent
Salary: $140,000 to $150,000 plus superannuation per annum
Personal Attributes
• A confident technical leader who sets the standard and expects the team to work to it.
• Methodical and analytical, particularly when tracing a difficult fault back to its cause.
• Commercially aware, with a firm grip on project cost, schedule and scope.
• Serious about safety in practice, on client sites and in the workshop, not only on paper.
• A clear communicator, equally comfortable with a client's production manager and with a technician on the workshop floor.
