About the Role
We are currently seeking an experienced Motor Mechanic / Mechanical Fitter to join our public sector client's Fleet & Operations team. In this role, you will be responsible for servicing, maintaining, and repairing a diverse fleet of council assets-ranging from heavy diesel plant and trucks through to commercial mowers and small engine equipment.
This position plays a critical operational role in keeping downtime to a minimum while ensuring all vehicles and machinery meet original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications and Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) standards.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Servicing: Perform routine servicing, diagnostic troubleshooting, and complex mechanical repairs on heavy diesel vehicles, municipal plant, light commercial vehicles, and small plant equipment (e.g., mowers, chainsaws, brushcutters).
Fault Diagnosis & Hydraulics: Conduct computer diagnostics, hydraulic servicing, structural welding, and minor fabrication work.
Breakdown & Operational Support: Assist with emergency breakdown call-outs as required to ensure core community services remain operational.
Parts & Workshop Management: Order spare parts in accordance with procurement guidelines, maintain workshop cleanliness, and manage tool serviceability.
Mentorship & Safety: Provide on-the-job guidance to apprentices and work experience students while strictly adhering to WHS standards, SWMS, and Safe Operating Procedures.
What You Need to Succeed
Trade Qualification: Cert III or IV in Automotive / Mechanical (Heavy Diesel Stream highly regarded) or post-trades mechanical qualification.
Technical Expertise: Demonstrated background in diesel engine diagnostics, hydraulic systems, welding, and small plant/equipment maintenance.
Licences: Current valid Victorian Driver's Licence (Heavy Rigid (HR) licence and/or Forklift/Loader tickets are highly desirable).
Autonomy & Safety: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, apply sound diagnostic judgment, and prioritize workplace health and safety.
Communication: Clear communication skills to liaise with suppliers, internal operators, and team coordinators.
