Retail Manager
About this job
Liberty Oil has been supplying fuel to Australian motorists since 1995 and made its name as the original fuel discounter in this country. Trading under the Liberty Convenience banner, the brand today stands behind more than 80 service stations across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, each one run on the belief that a fuel stop should be worth stopping for: coffee ground fresh and poured to order, quality food, a well stocked shop and spotless amenities. Our Gurley site sits on the Newell Highway between Narrabri and Moree, where it serves highway travellers, freight and transport operators, and the farming families who work the surrounding cotton and grain country. For many of our customers it is the only stop for a long stretch of road, which makes accurate pricing, a well stocked store and dependable service far more than a nice to have. We are now seeking a capable, hands on Retail Manager to take charge of the site day to day and drive its continued success.
Retail Manager | Liberty Oil Gurley | Gurley, NSW 2398
Key Responsibilities
• Decide the product range the store carries, from grab and go food, freshly ground coffee and cold drinks through to grocery lines, automotive consumables and driver essentials, and set the service standards the team is expected to deliver on every shift.
• Recruit, roster, train and supervise console operators and food service staff, covering induction, coaching, safe fuel and food handling, point of sale and cash procedures, and day to day performance management.
• Set minimum and maximum stock holdings for each category so that fast moving lines stay available and short dated food is not wasted, adjusting the range as demand shifts through planting, harvest and holiday traffic.
• Serve customers at the console and coffee machine during peak periods and advise them on the fuel grade best suited to their car, truck or farm machinery, on the correct use of oils, lubricants and additives, and on our loyalty and fuel card programmes.
• Establish and manage purchasing arrangements for the site, ordering from approved suppliers and distributors, negotiating on cost and delivery, and holding suppliers to the terms agreed.
• Set shop retail prices and margins within company guidelines, apply fuel pricing directions promptly to the price board and pump displays, and meet New South Wales fuel price notification requirements.
• Plan and deliver local marketing and promotional activity, including coffee and food deals, seasonal and harvest period offers, forecourt and in store signage, loyalty card sign ups and community involvement.
• Keep accurate stock records covering deliveries, transfers, wastage and stocktakes, and investigate variances rather than simply writing them off.
• Record and reconcile the site financial transactions, including shift takings, EFTPOS and fuel card settlements, account dockets and banking, and reconcile wet stock by dipping tanks against delivery and pump throughput figures.
• Prepare the site operating budget with the Area Manager, forecasting fuel volume and shop sales and setting wage cost and gross profit targets, then track results and correct variances while controlling waste, shrinkage, drive offs and cash discrepancies.
• Take responsibility for work health and safety, running inductions and toolbox talks, keeping risk assessments and incident records current, and ensuring fuel is stored, transferred and dispensed safely with spill kits, fire equipment and emergency procedures in place.
• Meet the site regulatory obligations, covering dangerous goods and environmental requirements for fuel storage, food safety standards, tobacco and other restricted product laws, and the Liberty operating standards.
• Keep the site clean, well lit and presentable, with tidy amenities, a clear forecourt and prompt attention to spills and hazards, and arrange servicing and repairs for pumps, refrigeration, coffee and point of sale equipment.
• Look after account and fuel card customers such as local farming and transport businesses, resolve customer complaints on the spot wherever possible, and maintain security and cash handling routines including opening, closing and safe management.
Qualifications and Experience
• At least 1 year of relevant experience in a retail management or supervisory role, ideally gained in a service station, convenience store, quick service food outlet or another fast paced retail environment.
• An AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma.
Hours: 38 hours per week - Full-time
Salary: $75,000 to $85,000 plus superannuation per annum
Personal Attributes
• Approachable and customer focused, with a warm manner behind the counter.
• Calm and well organised under pressure through busy highway and harvest periods.
• Commercially minded, with an eye for where a site is losing money or missing an opportunity.
• Self motivated and comfortable making decisions at a site some distance from head office.
• Reliable, punctual and flexible with rostered weekend and public holiday shifts.
